Exercise 3 - Kinetic Typography

during this task, we were assigned to do the kinetic typography of a music video, where we animate the lyrics of the song and our group choose to do the song Luther by Kendrick Lamar ft. SZA

throughout this project, I didn't document anything much in my progress because at some part I forgot about it, it was because I was back at home during the Chinese New York so I'm very detached from the work. For most of the progress, I search a lot of objects online like through Pinterest or Google to see if there's a picture that are related to the artist, because there are style that we're looking for is something familiar to this video

Even during the practice I wasn't getting familiar with the null object moving method, so I try my best to make it look as motion graphic as possible while maintaining visibility with the lyrics. It's very stressful because I don't really know if my headache is good and it's really hard for me to find a good picture especially when this artist doesn't really have too much picture of himself, so I had to take screenshot from the m/v itself to get them. For the TV animation I did it by myself by compiling a bunch of TV transparent or not from Pinterest and stacking them all at once so it looks like those kind of vintage TV shop that you could look at when you walk by. And when we assign our work arrangement on my part where the only one you have white background so it's very awkward for the transition that's why at the end of the video I make the car pull the screen into black so it lines up with my teammates next clip.

I was so busy that I don't even have time to discuss the transition with my teammate however everything turns out fine when my teammate like compile of the lyric clips into one. I cant even meet up with my teammate for the clips compiling meet up because I have scheduled a flight right at that day to go back to malaysia

Exercise 4 - Animated Bar Chart

Some students are assigned with different type of chart and I was assigned with bar chart.

for this exercise, I pretty much just followed the tutorial thoroughly and watched another shorts from youtube to know how to make the increasing number animating up

Exercise 5 - Vector Animation

for this exercise, I first separated the layers in illustrator and added another car to add more motion to it, then I export them to after effect and animated them one by one. its a fun one.

REFLECTION

Experience
throughout week 3 to week 5, I worked on kinetic typography, animated bar chart, and vector animation. for the kinetic typography project, it was a group work where we animated lyrics from a song, and I was responsible for a part of the video. the process was quite challenging because I had to find suitable visuals, animate them, and make sure it matches the lyrics. at the same time, I was also not fully focused during the process since I was back home during chinese new year, so I didn’t document much of my progress. for the other exercises like bar chart and vector animation, I followed tutorials and experimented with animation techniques in after effects.

Observation
I noticed that motion graphics requires both technical skills and planning. for kinetic typography, it was difficult to manage timing, transitions, and visual consistency, especially when working in a group without much discussion. I also realized that finding the right visual assets takes a lot of time, especially when there are limited references. for the bar chart, I observed that even simple animation needs precision in timing to make the data clear. for vector animation, I found that organizing layers properly in illustrator helps a lot when animating in after effects.

Findings
from this project, I learned that preparation and communication are very important, especially in group work. even though everything turned out fine in the end, lack of discussion could have caused issues in transitions and consistency. I also learned that having a clear concept and assets prepared earlier can make the animation process smoother. technically, I improved my understanding of after effects, even though I’m still not very confident with some tools like null object. overall, this project helped me understand the workflow of motion graphics better and the importance of time management and organization.
