Visual analysis is a way to break down an artwork by looking at what’s there, how it’s designed, and what it means. It helps understand the artist’s choices and the message behind the piece.

Observation means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design or art work

Analysis is done after doing observation where we could analyze how the artwork is made or what principles of design is used from an art or design work

Interpretation is done after doing observation and analysis where in this part, we discover the meaning behind the design

Selected Design/Artwork

Image
fig.1.1. Dragon Hanako by AidaIro

artist : Iro
year : 2024
medium : digital canvas
size : 1077 x 1523 pixels

Observation :

it's a picture Portrait picture of Hanako from the Manga Series called "Toilet Bound Hanako kun". he is drawn as a dragon and look bigger than the other characters. following up with other main character being drawn as a dragon. the way they are drawn in traditional clothing means there is a sense of festivities. the character are drawn in with expressive face and poses that gives it dynamics

Analysis :

design principles in her artwork
  • Contrast : in her artwork, there is a contrast between the thick and thin line art where the area where more line will crash and create thicker line art to give shadows, there is also contrast in her choice of colors where she's never afraid to use very contrasting colors like red and blue.
  • Proportion : Hanako-kun is drawn larger than the other characters so viewers will look at Hanako-kun first, then the other elements.
  • Emphasis : being the only large character and posing diagonally gives the character emphasis where it draws attention to hanako first and then the other characters.
fig.2.2. picture of analysis for Contrast, Proportion and Emphasis

  • Movement : the diagonal pose of hanako-kun, the other character pose, and the elements surrounding it, as well as the flowing hair and clothes gives the artwork movement and dynamic
fig2.3. picture of analysis for movement

  • Unity & Harmony : The color palette, featuring reds, blues, and golds, creates a harmonious look.  he Japanese-inspired patterns and elements unify the theme of the artwork.
fig.2.4. picture of analysis for Unity and Harmony

  • Composition : every character poses are drawn in a triangle shape and their positioning are also using the golden ratio

Interpretation :

From what I’ve observed and analyzed, I think Iro represents Hanako as a dragon because he’s a powerful and intelligent ghost. Dragons are also seen as protective, so it makes sense since Hanako has things he wants to protect, like the two characters in the artwork. It also shows his duality where on one side, he’s kind and friendly toward his human friends, but on the other, he has a darker past as a murderer. Plus, he can be mischievous, especially when someone threatens what’s important to him, which fits the dragon symbolism even more.

Ideation

Sketch 1

fig.1.2. Sketch 1

explanation for fig.1.2.
using the composition done by Iro itself, I tried to use my own story Main Character as the muse and its portraying  the main Character sitting while the wind is blowing and letters are floating everywhere.

some context about my character story "Undelivered Letter"
its a story about a boy named Nathan in his last high school year finally finding new meaning of friends, he met friends that helped him go through hardships, and his last high school year with them made him realize how much they meant to him. because in the past he used to have a best friend that left him, due to some issues they lost contact (the title is undelivered letter because they get in contact using letters) but because they don't know what's wrong, his old friends bullied him for the absence of his own best friend he felt betrayed and never tried to get close to anyone ever since. until his last high school year. when he met his new friends, he starts to care about things, make even better decision, etc.

Sketch 2

fig.1.3.1. Sketch 2

explanation for fig.1.3.1.
in this sketch, I was thinking to do the triangle composition, and the artwork's meaning into my own artwork as Hanako is a character that's stuck in the past but on the latest manga no longer does as he tried to move on and reborn. just like my character who used to be stuck in his past and has healed and moved on.

fig.1.3.2. Toilet Bound Hanako-kun Vol 6, Chapter 22

fig.1.3.4. toilet Bound Hanako-kun Vol 11, Chapter 43

Sketch 3

fig.1.4. sketch 3
explanation for fig.1.4.
from the artwork made by Iro, I decided to try drawing Nene Yashiro, the girl thats by the left of the artwork and improve it into a more detailed one as she is drawn as a chibi there.

Reflections

from this task, I learned how to do visual analysis better and learned more about my favorite's artist artwork. It helped me improve on my visual analysis skill and critical thinking on how to improve her art.
