EXPERIENCE
This semester has been a mix of emotional and creative challenges. At the start, I struggled a lot with self-branding—unsure of what represented me and feeling lost during the process. Despite moments of frustration and self-doubt, especially with Task 2A, I found more enjoyment and confidence in Task 2B, which allowed for more personal expression. The earlier weeks were overwhelming due to multiple modules and underestimated workloads, but learning about typographic systems, designing type, and making posters still brought some excitement and growth.
By the time I worked on Task 3, things felt more manageable. Using a font I had already designed made the process smoother, as I was familiar with the structure and styling. The only real challenge was crafting the ampersand, which took multiple attempts to get right. Overall, each task brought a unique experience that gradually helped build both my technical and creative confidence.
OBSERVATIONS
Throughout the semester, I noticed that I tend to be overly critical of my work—especially when it’s personal. I perform better when I stop chasing perfection and let the creative process unfold naturally. Feedback sessions revealed that I often overlook small details, which are actually essential in guiding how a typographic layout is experienced. I also realized I’m more drawn to soft, minimal, and balanced designs—even if I don’t always recognize that immediately.
In the font development stage, I became more aware of the technical structure of type—such as how punctuation has specific proportions and alignments. I paid closer attention to these elements after receiving critiques, and this made me more precise in my work. Small calculations and consistency in measurements played a larger role than I initially expected.
FINDINGS
One of the biggest takeaways from this semester is that the hardest part of design isn't always the technical execution—it’s understanding yourself. I constantly changed direction because nothing felt like “me,” but once I stopped forcing it, the process became more natural. While I still don’t have all the answers about my personal style, this journey helped me inch closer to discovering it. Task 2B especially highlighted the importance of freedom and experimentation in design.
I also found that creating a typeface is much more than sketching letters—it requires deep research, revision, and patience. Understanding the eight typographic systems helped me apply structure to my designs, and working with tools like FontForge taught me how technically demanding font development can be. In the end, I discovered that my typeface fits best in playful, doodle-style contexts, which reflects a part of my creative identity.
